7 Packing Mistakes That Will Ruin Your Trip (And How to Avoid Every One)

Almost every packing mistake comes down to the same root cause. Here are the seven most common ones — and exactly how to make sure they never happen on your trips.

Packing is one of those things that feels simple until it goes wrong. And when it goes wrong on a trip, it can range from mildly inconvenient to genuinely trip-ruining. Forgotten medication. No adapter for the plug sockets. Kids with no raincoats in a country that rains every afternoon.

The good news is that packing mistakes are almost entirely preventable. Every single one on this list comes down to the same root cause: packing from memory rather than from a proper list. Here are the seven most common ones and exactly how to avoid them.

1
Packing Without a List

This is the one that causes all the others. When you pack from memory, you pack confidently. You feel like you are getting everything because you are thinking about it carefully. But memory is not a system. It is fallible, biased towards things you used recently, and it completely forgets the things you only need occasionally. A proper packing list, organised by category, removes memory from the equation entirely. You work through it methodically. You tick things off. You know when you are done.

2
Forgetting Important Documents

Passport. Visa confirmation. Travel insurance documents. Hotel booking confirmations. Flight details. These are the things that, if missing, can derail the entire trip before it starts. Forgetting a restaurant booking is annoying. Forgetting a visa confirmation at the border is a different category of problem entirely. Keep a documents section on your packing list. Every time you book something, add the confirmation to the list of documents to bring.

3
Ignoring the Weather at Your Destination

It sounds obvious. It happens constantly. You pack for the weather you associate with the destination rather than the actual forecast. A Mediterranean city in October is not the same as a Mediterranean city in July. Check the weather for your specific travel dates, not the general climate. Check it a week before you leave, not the day you book. And pack accordingly — not based on what you wish the weather was going to be.

4
Overpacking Shoes

Shoes are the item that consistently breaks people's packing. They are heavy. They take up enormous amounts of space. And most people pack four pairs when two would cover everything. The formula that works for almost any trip: one pair of comfortable walking shoes for daytime, one pair that is slightly smarter for evenings out, and sandals if the destination calls for them. Everything else is optimism about activities that probably will not happen.

5
Not Having Travel-Size Toiletries

If you are flying with hand luggage only, this one can end your trip in the security queue. But even if you are checking a bag, full-size toiletries add weight and take up space that could be used for things you actually want to bring back. Invest in a set of reusable travel bottles and decant your usual products. Or switch to solid shampoo and conditioner bars which are not subject to liquid restrictions and last surprisingly long.

6
Forgetting Kids' Medicine

If you are travelling with children, their medication is the one category where forgetting is not just an inconvenience. Children's paracetamol and ibuprofen are not always easy to find abroad, and even when they are, you are trying to find a pharmacy at eleven at night with a feverish child. Keep a running list of every medication your children take or might need. Add it to your packing list. Check it before every trip without exception.

7
Leaving Packing to the Night Before

Packing the night before a trip means packing in a hurry, under pressure, when you are tired and thinking about everything else you still need to do. It is when most mistakes happen and when most things get forgotten. Starting three or four days before departure means you can pack methodically, realise what is missing while there is still time to sort it, and spend the night before actually resting rather than hunting for your travel adapter at midnight.
