Most travel stress happens in the final days before departure. Not because the trip is genuinely complicated, but because everything gets left until the last minute and suddenly you are trying to do thirty things in two days while also trying to get ahead at work, sort out childcare, and remember where you put your passport.
This checklist spreads those thirty things across the thirty days before you leave so that departure day is calm rather than chaotic. Work through it at whatever pace suits you. Some weeks you will tick off ten things. Others, just one. But by the time you get to the airport, everything is done.
30 Days Before: The Big Picture
- Confirm all your major bookings — flights, accommodation, airport transfers, car hire. Check dates are correct and confirmation emails are saved somewhere you can find them
- Check your passport expiry date. Many countries require six months of validity beyond your travel dates. If yours is close, apply for renewal now
- Check visa requirements for every country you are visiting, including transit countries
- Take out travel insurance if you have not already. Do it now so that cancellation coverage applies to the weeks ahead
- Notify your bank and credit card providers that you are travelling
21 Days Before: The Practical Stuff
- Book any activities, tours, or experiences that need advance reservations. Popular things sell out
- Make restaurant reservations for any meals that are important to you, especially the first night
- Research local transport at your destination — metro, buses, taxis, car hire
- Check local customs and etiquette. Dress codes, tipping culture, photography rules at religious sites
- Sort foreign currency or confirm your card works without fees abroad
14 Days Before: The Itinerary
- Build your day-by-day itinerary. A loose plan for each day with the things you definitely want to do and space for everything else
- Check the opening times and days for everything you want to visit
- Research the weather for your travel dates and adjust your packing plan accordingly
- Download offline maps for your destination. Google Maps has an offline download feature
- If travelling with children, confirm their passports and any required consent letters
10 Days Before: Health and Documents
- Check whether any vaccinations are required or recommended for your destination
- See your GP if you need prescription medication for the trip
- Pack a basic medical kit — paracetamol, ibuprofen, antihistamines, rehydration sachets, insect repellent
- Make digital copies of your passport, insurance policy, and key booking confirmations
- Share your itinerary with someone at home
7 Days Before: Practical Preparation
- Start your packing list. Not the actual packing yet — just the list. Work through it category by category
- Buy anything missing from your packing list — travel adapters, toiletries, kids items
- Arrange any house or pet care for while you are away
- Set out-of-office replies for email and sort any work handovers
- Confirm all reservations one more time — restaurants, tours, transfers
2–3 Days Before: Final Checks
- Do the actual packing. Work through your list methodically. Tick things off. Do not pack from memory
- Check the weather forecast one more time and adjust if needed
- Confirm your flight check-in, seat selection, and baggage allowance
- Prepare your airport bag — passport, boarding pass, phone charger, snacks
- Set your alarm
"If you have worked through this list, departure day should feel straightforward. Everything is booked and confirmed. Everything is packed. The only thing left is to enjoy it."
